iPhone 18 Pro: Full Specs, Price, and Everything Apple Didn't Hold Back

For six years, buying the smaller iPhone Pro meant paying a quiet tax. Same name as the Pro Max, slightly worse phone — shorter battery, less zoom, a lower storage ceiling, sometimes a downgraded lens. Apple never advertised it. You just noticed three months later when a friend's bigger phone did something yours couldn't.

That tax is gone this year.

The iPhone 18 Pro has the same chip as the Pro Max. The same three 48MP cameras, the same variable aperture, the same 12GB of RAM, the same 2TB ceiling, the same modem and the same cooling system. The only two things $1,299 buys over $1,199 are a bigger screen and a bigger battery.

If you've wanted a phone you can use one-handed and resented what it cost you, this is the first year that trade stopped existing.

iPhone 18 Pro Price and Release Date

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB above it. That 2TB tier is new to the smaller Pro.

Watch the pre-order day. Apple usually opens on a Friday; this year it's Saturday at 5 a.m. Pacific. Every year people sleep through it assuming they have another day and end up with October ship dates.

Design: 211 Grams, and Why That Number Matters

The Pro weighs 211g. The Pro Max weighs 249g. That 38-gram gap is the widest it has ever been between the two, because Apple pushed the Pro Max to the heaviest iPhone ever built while leaving the smaller one roughly where it was.

Thirty-eight grams sounds like nothing on paper — about eight sheets of A4. In practice it's the difference between a phone that disappears in a jacket pocket and one you're aware of all day. It's also the one specification on this page no review can settle for you. Go hold both.

Thickness is unchanged at 8.75mm, which is quietly impressive given there's a bigger battery and a much larger cooling chamber inside. The frame is still aluminum rather than titanium, and that's our main complaint. On the 17 Pro Max we used last year, the rails picked up visible edge scratches inside a week of ordinary pocket use. iPhone 18 Pro Colors: Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy

Apple sells the iPhone 18 Pro in four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy.

This is where most pre-launch coverage got it wrong, and plenty of it is still live. Through August a widely repeated leak had the lineup as Coffee Brown, Purple and Burgundy with no black option. Only Burgundy survived. Black is still here, Glacier is a new cool white, and neither Coffee Brown nor Purple exists.

Burgundy is the one that'll be in every unboxing video — a deep wine red, easily the most distinctive Pro colour in several generations. Glacier is the sleeper pick. If you specifically want Burgundy at 512GB or above, that's the combination most likely to slip to October if you wait.

The iPhone 18 Pro Dynamic Island: Smaller, Not Gone

The Dynamic Island is still here. It's smaller and redesigned, and it now holds three Live Activities at once instead of two. Face ID has not moved under the display.

Worth stating plainly, because a lot of coverage said the opposite before the keynote and hasn't been corrected. Reporting from several reliable outlets pointed to a simple punch-hole with the Face ID array moving beneath the panel. Renders based on that were everywhere. It didn't happen.

Whether the smaller cutout matters depends on how much the old one bothered you. Side by side with a 17 Pro the difference is obvious; alone on a desk it isn't. Under-display Face ID is still coming eventually — expect the rumour back in about four months for the iPhone 19 Pro, and expect it to be uncertain again. Display

Size and resolution didn't move. What matters is the 3,000-nit outdoor peak — the same as the Pro Max, and the number that decides whether you can read your screen at noon. Samsung's S26 Ultra matches it, so this is table stakes now rather than an advantage.

Camera: The Rumour Everyone Doubted Is the Best Thing Here

The main camera can physically change its aperture — a first for iPhone. Six laser-cut blades on a rotor move between ƒ/1.48 and ƒ/4.0, automatically or from four manual stops.

In plain terms: at ƒ/1.48 the lens takes in noticeably more light than last year's fixed ƒ/1.78, which should help in restaurants, at night, anywhere the shutter used to slow down and soften the shot. At ƒ/4 the opposite — more of the frame stays sharp, so the person at the back of a group photo isn't blurred and backgrounds stay legible. Apple is also opening an API so third-party camera apps can push beyond those four stops. Will it transform every photo? Probably not; phone sensors are small enough that ƒ/4 here isn't ƒ/4 on a real camera. But it's the first genuinely new photographic capability Apple has shipped in years.

All three lenses are 48MP now, so switching to ultrawide or telephoto no longer drops you to a worse sensor. The telephoto reaches 4x optically at 100mm with an 8x option at 200mm — reach you previously had to buy a Samsung for, and identical on both Pro models. Chip and Thermals: The Fix Is the Cooling

The 2nm process got the headlines, but it isn't the most interesting line here. The GPU went from six cores to seven with up to 40% more performance, and the Neural Engine doubled to 32 cores — roughly twice the on-device AI throughput, which matters more this year because iOS 27's rebuilt Siri does far more work on the phone than in Apple's data centres.

The change we most want to test is the cooling. Apple tripled the vapor chamber's surface area and claims sustained performance holds up as much as 40% better. Our 17 Pro Max got genuinely uncomfortable to hold after about forty minutes of demanding gaming, with frame rates dropping once it did. If this fixes that, it's a bigger daily improvement than the GPU number — peak performance you can't sustain isn't performance you can use. Battery and Charging

Apple doesn't publish mAh, and there are two figures depending on where you buy. No SIM tray means more room for the cell, so US units get 4,288mAh while markets that keep a physical slot get 4,056mAh. Both come from regulatory filings, not Apple.

What Apple does publish: 36 hours of video playback, up from 33 on the 17 Pro. The Pro Max claims 45, so this is the one place the smaller phone genuinely gives something up. Charging finally moved too — 50% in about 15 minutes on a 60W adapter, down from 20 minutes at 40W. Still behind Android flagships at 80W+, and still no charger in the box, but "Apple never improves charging" doesn't hold this year.

Connectivity, and a Warning If You Travel

Apple's own C2 modem is in every unit and Qualcomm is out of the iPhone entirely — the end of a very long, very expensive project that got about a minute of stage time. Whether it holds signal as well in weak coverage is the question that'll actually affect you, and it only shows up over weeks of real use.

The practical warning: in the US these are eSIM-only phones. Apple's specs state plainly they don't accept physical SIM cards. If you're importing a US unit or you travel on local SIMs, check your carriers support eSIM before you order — not after the box arrives.

Who Should Buy the iPhone 18 Pro

Buy it if you're on a 15 Pro or older. A materially faster GPU, double the AI performance, three more hours of video, much faster charging, three 48MP lenses and aperture control. That's a real upgrade.

Buy it if you've always wanted the smaller Pro but felt short-changed. You're giving up screen and battery, nothing else. If you've been buying the Pro Max purely to avoid missing out, save the $100 and the 38 grams.

Skip it if you have a 17 Pro. You'd be paying for aperture control, cooling and charging speed. Good year, not a necessary one.

Look elsewhere if what you want is more screen. Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, was announced at the same event at $1,999 with a 7.6-inch inner display — but pre-orders don't open until October 16. What holds it back is the same aluminum frame that scratched last year and a $100 rise that's easier to swallow than the $300 everyone feared.
